March 7 – Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and ?
Leader – Larry Jordan, 361-443-0744.
Directions. Meet at the refuge headquarters at 8:00 am. To reach Santa Ana NWR, take US 77 south to Harlingen and then take US 83 west for about 25 miles (to Alamo) and take FM 907 south about five miles to US 281. Turn left (east) on 281, and watch for the refuge sign on the right in about one-fourth of a mile. We will bird Santa Ana in the morning and then make a decision on where to go in the afternoon. We may stay at Santa Ana or go to such spots as Anzalduas County Park, Quinta Mazatlan, Estero Llano Grande SP, etc. The most likely place is Anzalduas, but if any unusual species are being seen in the area we will go where they are being seen. The trip will finish about 3:00 to 3:30 pm. Expected species include such LRGV specialties as Altamira Oriole, Green and Ringed Kingfishers, Plain Chachalaca and White-tipped Dove.
