AOC Field Trip

Our October 6th field trip will take us west of the Coastal Bend.

Meet at 8 a.m. at John Sablatura County Park in Banquete.

To reach the park, from I69/77 at Robstown (Five-Points area), take TX 44 west 6 or 7 miles to Banquete. Another 1/2 mile past CR 666 in Banquete, the park entrance will come up quickly on your left. (There is a turn lane.) Gather at the restrooms just inside the park. There are restrooms farther into the park as well.

The recon visit on Sept. 25 found the park pretty grown over, so folks will surely need bug spray. It is a small park but has some good habitat which might contain migrants. We can likely cover this park in an hour.

From here, the plan is to head west again, to Lake Findley (Lake Alice). To find this park, continue west on TX 44, and pass through Agua Dulce. Continue about five or six miles more, and bear right to TX 359 North, just before the overpass. Then take the first left onto FM 3376, which will take you to the park's entrance road on the right, just inside the city limits.

We will motor slowly up the entrance road. Look - and listen - for Olive Sparrows, Long-billed Thrasher, and maybe some Broad-wing Hawks lifting off.

We'll park near the lake, bird the trees and field nearby and then glass the lake. Lots of butterflies and dragonflies are fun to track down and ID, so bring those field guides as well, if you have them. As with the park, it might not take more than an hour to digest this site; if folks have brought food, the dock on the lake has a nice breeze and would be a good place to sit a while and eat. There are picnic tables, but you might want to bring your own folding chair as well.

There is no plan to bird other areas. We will see if there's a consensus to go elsewhere or just wrap up a short trip after the Lake.

The trip will be led by Phyllis Hibdon and husband Mike Egar. They can be contacted at 361-739-7179 (Phyllis' cell) or 330-998-2910 (Mike's cell).
