Field Trip: Choke Canyon State Park

January 20 - Choke Canyon State Park (Dane Ferrell) 830-481-6393
Time & Place: 8:00 a.m. at the entry gate to the South Shore Unit. We will bird this area for 2 hours or so, then head west around 15 minutes to the Calliham Unit.
Texas State Park pass required, otherwise there is a $5 per person entry fee.

Duration of trip: until 12:00 p.m. or as long as the birding is good.

Directions: From Corpus Christi: go north on IH-37. Exit at Texas Hwy 72 west to Three Rivers. The South Shore Unit of Choke Canyon is 3.5 miles past (west) of Three Rivers.

  • Restrooms: at the park.
  • Lunch: pack a sandwich just in case.
  • Ease of hike: easy to drive and walk.
  • Target birds: we will look for wintering landbirds and waterfowl, along with the numerous resident species.
