Laredo Field Trip
Aransas Bird and Nature Club/Audubon Outdoor Club
Saturday, March 4, 2017
Co-leaders for this action-packed trip will be Susan Foster, Judy Kestner, and Laredo’s own Raul Delgado. As we need to get an early start, and Laredo is approximately a 3 hour drive from Rockport, most participants will need to plan for a hotel on Friday night. We recommend the Best Western San Isidro, which is very close to our first stop on Saturday. A room with a king bed at the Best Western is $120 per night and with two queens is $130. The address is: 1410 Hospitality Drive, Laredo, Texas 78045. Their phone number is 956-723-1600 and website is www.bestwestern.com . Please feel free to find other accommodations if this does not work for you.
Since we will be caravaning to the different birding spots, we will limit the number of participants to 20. I will keep a waiting list if we have more than that who are interested.
We will leave from the Best Western parking lot on Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. as we head for our first stop, the Max Mandel Municipal Golf Course. Our target birds at the Max are Red-billed Pigeons, White-collared Seedeaters, and Gray Hawks. There is no fee, but we must rent golf carts, which cost $19 for two people.
We will spend about three hours at the Max and then hit other Laredo hot spots, with lunch being at a local restaurant depending where we are at the time. We plan on finishing up the trip at approximately 3:00 p.m. for those who want to get back to Corpus Christi/Rockport. Some participants have told me they plan to stay Saturday night as well. There is definitely enough birding to do that!
Please bring walkie talkies and fresh batteries if you have them, as well as plenty of water, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat. Long pants are recommended as that country is full of prickly things. The average high temperature in March is 80 degrees with a low of 57, so dress accordingly, and keep an eye on the weather. It can be quite variable.
Raul is a professional Laredo guide, so we are also collecting $10 each for his fee, which is a real bargain for an all-day trip.
